Hey guys, last week I mentioned that I was joining in the fun with the Home Depot DIH (Do it Herself) seasonal door hanger workshop. These were so easy to make and they really bring the holiday spirit to the front of my home. And they are reversible! I created a snowman and scarecrow to welcome my guest.

Added bonus, lots of my blogger friends are listed at the bottom, check their projects out too!

Meet my “Howdy Fall” Scarecrow: Happy eyes and smiling faces – double the fun!

and my “Jolly Snowmen”: Quirky faces, scarves made from ribbon and non-melting snowmen are the best!snowman-door-hangers-reverses-to-fall-door-idea-at-refresh-restyleI hope you signed up for the DIY Door Hangers project at Home Depot!

Let me show you how I created these two cuties using their simple to follow instructions and a few tools.reversible-door-hanger-dih-workshop-from-home-depot

Materials needed:

  • 1 – 1 ̋ x 6 ̋ x 8 ́ Tongue and Groove Pattern Stock Board
  • 1 – 1 ̋ x 4 ̋ x 8 ́ Common or Pine Board
  • 1 – Box #8 x 11  1⁄4 ̋ Phillips Square Drive Flat-Head Full Thread Zinc Coated Multi-Material Screw
  •  1 – Pack #8 15 1⁄8 ̋ Zinc-Plated Steel Eye Screw
  •  1 – 1⁄4 ̋ x 50 ́ Manila Rope
  • 1 – 8 oz. Carpenter’s Wood Glue

Tools needed:

  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Safety Goggles
  • Saw (I used a miter saw)
  • Screwdriver
  • Claps to hold boards after glueing
  • Drill/drill bits to pre-drill for screws

Measure, mark and cut:

Measure and mark three (3) 32 ̋ sections from the 1 ̋ x 6 ̋ x 8 ́ Tongue and Groove Pattern Stock Board and two (2) 24 ̋ sections plus two angled sections from the 1 ̋ x 4 ̋ x 8 ́ common board. The two angled sections should be 4 ̋ long along the top edge and 3 ̋ long along the bottom edge of the board.

Looking at the cut diagram below, you can see how easy this seasonal character door hanger is to cut:

The Base – Assemble:

Lay the three 32 ̋ sections vertically side by side and run a bead of glue in the grooves. Secure the boards making sure to keep them level across the top and bottom.how-to-make-a-seasonal-door-hanger-glue-the-edges-of-the-shiplap

The hat brim – Attach:

  • Measure and mark 8 ̋ down from the top of the base on the right side and 12 ̋ down from the top of the base on the left side. Angle one 24 ̋ section flat across the assembled base at the 8 ̋ and 12 ̋ marks from the top of the base. Make sure the board overhangs the base equally on both the left and right sides. Secure the board to the base at the angle with six (6) 1 1 ⁄4 ̋ screws, two in each Tongue and Groove board, I pre-drilled.
  • Slide the angular cut pieces underneath the attached 24 ̋ board ensuring they are flush with the base and with the 24 ̋ board on both sides. Secure the angular cut pieces to the 24 ̋ board using the 1 1 ⁄4 ̋ screw. Repeat on the other side.
  • Add steel eye screws screws to the top and attach rope to hang.

The Fun Part:

Use any paint and supplies you’d like to create any seasonal character you can think of!

You know I love simple projects, so I just painted two colors of craft paint on both sides. Because I did two, I wanted the look to be uniform, I cut an index card into and egg shape and traced the eyes on to the face of my snowmen.

I used Christmas ribbon for the scarf and a few holly leaves on the brim of the hat.

For the scarecrows, I cut a turquoise bandana in half and used hot glue to attach. On the brim of the hat, I couldn’t resist a strip of burlap and a little raffia for the hair.fall-door-idea-and-it-reverses-to-a-winter-idea-at-refresh-restyle
