Mudroom Storage Idea

The previous owners used this cabinet to house their TV and store various items. After removing the wall to the right of it, we don’t need a tv there any longer. The mudroom storage idea came to me in a dream one night, ok not really! It’s located next to the back door making it perfect for a drop zone to hang jackets, backpacks and purses.Β I feel so organized and I can always find my purse. We are slowly working our way around the Alabama farmhouse, repurposing and adding our touches everywhere.

I almost didn’t share this easy project but decided to join in the fun with the Power Tool Challenge team anyway. Yes, it’s a simple and easy but think of all the possibilities of repurposing! Be sure to check out all the other projects at the end of the post!

Add a shelf anywhere with Kreg shelf pin jig

Here’s how it started out:

Sorry for the bad phone photo:

Former tv cabinet is now a mudroom drop zone

Before tv cabinet is now a mudroom closet

Plan:

  • Relocate router/booster
  • Add a shelf to the open area
  • Add hooks (in the cabinet behind the closed doors)
  • Only have 1 shelf in the bottom

Create a wood jig to place your shelf in the same position on each side

The Kreg shelf pin jig allowed me to repurpose this cabinet. In an ideal world you add the pin holes before you install a cabinet. Our space was preexisting so we made a small wood jig to position the pin hole just where we wanted it.

The kit comes with great instructions, the drill bit is included with a stop collar so that you don’t drill all the way through your wood.

Use this Kreg to add shelves anywhere

Per the instructions you can use a clamp to hold the jig, our cabinet was deeper than any clamp we had. Using the wood jig and little pressure the hole came out perfect. I wanted the shelf just above the 2 outlets. If you want your shelf to be adjustable use all the holes or as many as desired.

Add the pins and shelf, start decorating.

TV cabinet is now a mudroom closet

The cabinet is 42″ wide. I added the first hook at 21″ and measured 7″ out for the remaining. I found these cute hooks at World Market. I measured first, marked the spot and predrilled.

The cabinet can stay now!! Small mudroom storage is better than NO storage! Only one thing left to do, paint it!!

    1. What a pretty cabinet and great idea to make it into a mud room! I carved out a corner in my dining room and put a hall tree there for a makeshift mudroom and I love it. Sharing on G+. Thanks for linking up at #MerryMonday!

    2. I love how you turned an old cabinet into something functional! It’s a beautiful cabinet and now it has a second life! I need to find one of those Kreg Jig Shelf tools too!

    3. This is a great idea, Debbie! And the fact that it was the previous owners makes it all the better. Left-over furniture! πŸ™‚ And it’s in perfect condition. People will look at TV cabinets a little differently now. I always wondered what I would do with them when I see them at the thrift store…. πŸ™‚

    4. Debbie,

This is an awesome idea…. I would probably paint it… because I paint everything. I love how the “drop zone” is behind closed doors.

I don’t have that Kreg Jig, but thinking i need to get one.
