Painted Shower Curtain

Recently I painted several rooms OC-48 Hazy Skies by Benjamin Moore.  I am in love with that color.  One of the rooms is a downstairs bathroom. You know how one things leads to another,  I needed a new shower curtain.

The bathroom ceilings are not that tall, and the normal size shower curtains make them look even shorter.  I found a tall shower curtain online and ordered it.  I thought the height would help the room. It looked like a cheap prom dress, I took it back and bought two other ones (normal size this time) I did not like them either.

Pinterest to the rescue! I came across these curtains from Ballard Designs:

(Burlap Crewel Damask Panel from Ballard Designs)

I used a 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby to buy this large stencil.

(I have entered several blog giveaways for one that is similar to this, I haven’t won one yet!  I will not give up!)

My fabric choice was the frugal woman’s linen.  The all around versatile drop cloth.   The one from Ballard Designs is burlap, I thought the drop cloth would work better for me.  I folded the fabric to find the center, used blue tape to guide my placement and I started stenciling.

I used Annie Sloan Old White paint, it dried very quick.  I hung it the same day and used my steamer to get the wrinkles out.

The Old White looks great on the drop cloth.

I used an oil rubbed bronze tension rod and hung it at ceiling height.

The room doesn’t look like it’s cut in half with the tall shower curtain.

I hung another rod on the inside with a plastic shower curtain (tall also) on it.  When the shower is in use you can leave this one open, creating all the light needed.

I’m very happy with my new shower curtain.  Have you found anything on Pinterest that you’ve recreated??  I have a long list of projects~all from Pinterest!

    1. Gorgeous!! I love the stencil design better than the original pattern. You did a fabulous job! Your bathroom looks so nice and I do love the shower curtains when they are hung “taller” than the norm. This is inspiring!

    2. Great idea! I would love to try this as I am renovating a bathroom in my house and find the shower curtains to be either too busy, too colorful or down right boring! Thanks for sharing and writing such a great blog!

      • I love this idea! I wish I had seen it sooner. I just bought new shower curtains for renovated bath. I used window curtains because I could not find a suitable shower curtain. I plan to hang them at ceiling height. Thanks for sharing idea.

    3. Thanks for a great inexpensive idea! I have never stenciled anything. Do I have to use a certain type of paint?
      Thanks again!!

    4. I’m so glad you shared this on fb today! I am getting ready to make valances for my breakfast nook, and have a ton of dropcloth left over from my pillows. I may just have to grab another to make a shower curtain! I seriously love it, and I have a huge stencil from Cutting Edge that I haven’t used yet! Thanks, Debbie!

    6. Luvly Debbie. Funny, I have been looking at my shower curtain and thinking that I wished it went all the way to the ceiling as well., for the same reason. Low 8 ft ceilings in the bathrooms…
Now I have a sweet idea to ponder!

    8. I love it! You did a fabulous job with the stencil and it looks a lot better than the PB style. I really like that you made the shower curtain taller…looks perfect. I will be interested to know how the paint holds up on fabric.

    9. What a wonderful idea…I actually like yours better. I’ve never used the chalk paint on fabric before…I guess I’ll have to stay tuned to see how it holds up. Way to be resourceful!

    12. Debbie! These are absolutely the perfect solution. I love the stencil, the height, the bronze shower curtain. You did a fabulous job. I have a question for you, are you happy with the weight of the drop cloth? Does it make it heavy? I so adore this inspiration (yours look so much better than BD–shhh.)

    14. Debbie, I love your shower curtain more than the burlap panels from Ballards and I am sure it cost a whole lot less, too. That looks so good. Thanks for joining the party.

    15. It looks so beautiful Debbie and I think it’s better than the Ballards one! I have always used window drapes as shower curtains because of that whole length/flimsiness issue with regular shower curtains. I think you knocked this way out of the park!

    19. Wonderful post! Your shower curtain looks fab. Am thinking of using burlap for new living room curtains in my home but thought they’d look too plain – never thought about painting them!!! I’m another Pinterest fan too. Such wonderful ideas but so little time to do them all……. lol x

    20. I just pinned this. Your shower curtain looks GREAT! I’m getting ready to do a mini-over in our guest bathroom and now I’m thinking instead of stenciling the wall maybe I’ll just do a shower curtain. Thanks for the inspiration.
