Tips for Painting With Red

I’ve been working on my guest room, most of the colors in there are gray, black, white, with a couple of navy chevron pillows.

But that was soon to change!

I’m in this fun “DIY Furniture Girls” group! This month our theme was to paint something RED!

Pop of Red in the guest room

I started with this:

Free table before being painted with red.

Here’s my free table, it’s been everywhere except in the house.  It was mostly used for storage in the shop, holding paint and junk. It had a few paint splatters on it, so I sanded them off.

Red is a hard color to paint with or at least it has been for me.  It takes lots of coats and doesn’t cover well.  I have a secret weapon and I’m sharing it with you today!

DecorArt Paint and Rust-Oleum Primer

  •  I used Painters Touch 2X Flatred Primer by RustOleum.  I just took the table outside and sprayed away.
  • And I painted this piece with Decoarrt, DAD18-22 Designer Series, 18-Ounce, Tuscan Red. Did you notice that it’s for furniture, walls, wood and canvas, and it always has been.  This paint has been around for a while and I never see anyone using it except for me 🙂

  • For the top-coat I used Maison Blanche Antique Wax in light brown

And then Lucy from Craftberry Bush offered the cutest print for free for a limited time. It looks perfect in my scrap wood frame beside my little deer bookend.

It’s been a few years since I had red in the house. But I think it’s a keeper!

    1. The red table is perfect in that spot:) Great tip for the primer too, I’m sure lots of people run into the same issue! I’ve also have been using the DecoArt paints and like the coverage. It’s what I used on my red projec0 this go-around!

    2. LOVE RED!
I, too, have been using rustoleum flat red primer and decoart paints for years.
Decoart has some lovely metallics in their line also.
I don’t really get the whole ” no primer needed” craze.
If you would like your project to look professional, you gotta sand and prime!
I agree with you, the key is in the prep!
Thanks for sharing your great work and tips.

    3. I love red!!! I have a red dresser in my kitchen (which is yellow) by the back door. It is great for storage, keys and have a plant on top. Your table looks absolutely stunning with your guest room décor….I love it!!!! Great job!
