Today while I am at Parrish Island with my Marine Drill Instructor nephew,
Angie from The Country Chic Cottage is here!
Hello all!  I am Angie with The Country Chic Cottage.  So happy to be here today!  I thought I would share with y’all some of the progress in my living room.  It is not quite there yet but I like to take baby steps.  (Or more like I can only afford to take baby steps.)  We made a barn wood desk hutch a while back to go over our desk.  It was the perfect start to this adventure.  The next project was reFreshing a vintage cabinet to go in that corner.  Do y’all love a good transformation as much as I do?  I thought so!

Here is the before.  This picture is even AFTER I started working on it some.  It was pretty bad y’all.  I knew I was in for some work.

The paint job was awful and DIRTY!  The hardware was in really bad shape and after a failed attempt to save it I ended up throwing it out.

Of course, the inside was covered in faded 80s contact paper.  But I found a super easy way to remove contact paper!  The tip seriously saved my sanity.

As I mentioned above, I had to order all new hardware.  The spacing on the original holes was very odd.  I ended up going with ebay.  The handles were the perfect shape, color, and best of all…price!

For the inside of the cabinet, I had this vision of something behind those glass doors.  Something on the back that would make the cabinet pop.  I saw this tutorial over on Pretty Handy Girl on how to add fabric to the back of cabinets and knew that was my solution.  Brittany’s tutorial is super easy to follow and best of all it can be applied and removed easily.  It is really perfect for a vintage piece that you don’t want to harm.  I will offer some instructions below, but head on over to Pretty Handy Girl for even more pictures and step-by-step instructions!

For my cabinet, I wanted to use vintage quilt squares.  If you don’t follow my blog, I love all things vintage and these quilt squares are definitely my thing.  I had to sew the squares together for this project.  Plus I added filler strips to some of them to have something to wrap and secure around the foam board.   In my case, these squares were almost a perfect fit so the excess was needed.

Now for the very basic how to steps.  Cut foam board to the exact size of the back of your cabinet.

Wrap your fabric (or quilt squares) around the foam board and secure with tape in the back.  Pop the board into place.  The tight fit will hold it securely without any glue or tacks or anything!  See this is perfect!  So easy to change out on a whim.

The butterflies are all made with different fabrics.  I tried to coordinate them somewhat with my living room colors.  The fabric is slightly discolored with age and really perfect for my decor style.

I used Annie Sloan chalk paint for the creamy off white on the cabinet.  I would highly recommend chalk paint to anyone painting furniture.  This was my first time using it and I was very impressed and can’t wait to use it again.

I also added a stencil to the front of both doors.  I actually just mixed up a custom color using my craft paints for this step.
I used the large deco damask stencil from Royal Design Studio for the painting.  After the stencil was complete, I used the Annie Sloan wax over the top.  Rubbing slightly to give the stenciled area a slight worn feeling.

After my reFresh of the cabinet, I moved her to her new home.  We are using it to store various books and office supplies.  I love how it lightened up this corner that had gotten somewhat dark after the addition of my hutch.  Now it seems like the perfect balance.

Thanks so much Debbie for having me today.  I hope y’all enjoyed and will come over and visit the cottage sometime!
~Thanks!~
