Back in Oct/Nov ’11, I began to dream about a round table. Really.

I got a price on having one built, I thought that I could save money.  That didn’t work out.

If you follow me on Facebook, you know that I bought one in Tennessee while I was visiting for my 5 year old grandson’s birthday.  My daughter and I went shopping and she spotted this little old lady in a dark, dusty corner.  Mom!  come here.  Needless to say I got so excited to see a round table with a cool base!  I bought it, for $115.  (Me thinking) After I paid, how will I get her home, 10 hour drive, 4 door car.  As fate would have it my other grandson’s birthday is in November-I drove the truck and brought my prize home in 3 different pieces.

(Murphy was not impressed.)

She was in much worse shape than I lead myself/everyone to believe.  I didn’t care, I knew she was what I wanted.

This is the middle, upside down.

Top and base, with real wooden wheels, that still work great!

This is my favorite stripper.  It was a beautiful walnut veneer.  I wanted to paint the base and stain the top until:

Can you believe this?  I tried everything to remove that.  Boo hoo, tears did not work either.

The base required the use of these torture tools.

I thought the veneer would come off easy.  Not Easy!

I used a lot of tools and still left some veneer on.

She’s been doing double duty.  She sits in front of an awesome window, with a bench on one side.

She celebrated Christmas with us.

We’ve eaten a few meals around her.

The old girl, looks good again!

    1. Great job. I noticed you said that the table had a beautiful walnut veneer, but the top of the table you displayed is oak, not walnut. Regardless… Gorgeous table!

    2. SO SO SO glad I stumbled upon your blog! It is like I was like I was meant to see this today! I too found a similar table in a thrift store…..it was a round pedestal table with claw feet for $20.00!!! So I thought to myself “what the heck!? ” even if I completely mess it up I will only be out $20 bucks……so I bought it……a couple months and a few thousand tears later it is still a work in progress…..I stripped the finish off sanded it down and left it with my FIL to paint with his sprayer….left directions for him to use a black gloss oil based. When he brought it to me, it was so glossy I could see my reflection in the top……sooooooooo I tried several methods to degloss (to no avail) so I have completely resanded and am starting over. I brushed the first coat and it showed brush marks so I sanded then sprayed a coat ……it looks better. However, I was perusing the paint aisle yesterday at Home Depot and a can of black stain caught my eye. I almost bought it but thought better of it considering how many “trial “items I have bought lately …….then I see your fab table then to read that is what you used!!! I think I heard a choir of angels sing! So I just gotta ask : did you brush the stain on? Or how did you apply?
      Love your blog btw!!

    3. I absolutely LOVE how your dining room is set up! I love the warmth it brings and the look! I just told my husband we have to do this with our table! It’s round but doesn’t have near as much character as yours has:) Great Job!!

    6. You did a beautiful job! So like me also, in buy and then figure out how to get it home! I do want to give you a hint about veneer… if you use wet bath towels rags and leave then on a veneer top overnight, keep re-wetting the veneer will peel off with very little work. I learned this off a blog and although I have been refinishing furniture all my adult life, I never knew this! It opened up a new possibilities for purchases, as often the wood underneath is very nice. I also recommend wood bleach for dark stains on stripped wood.
      You have a lovely home!

    9. She looks lovely! Isn’t it weird that the black circle stain jumped out when you stripped it. I hate when stuff like that happens. Love it with the white chairs. I have a wooden round table with black chairs, so sort of the same look.

    12. Debbie, I wondered how you got that black to look so nice…black stain, brilliant! I’ve tried black paint on tables before with less than stellar long term results. I LOVE how your stain looks. The table turned out gorgeous in your space. You’ll enjoy her for years to come! Deb

    13. Love the table! I too had been wanting a round table. My FIL found so old wood and made me a top. My husband found an oak pedestal while jogging. The top is huge (60″diameter by 2″ thick), weighs a ton and is a little uneven as the wood is…..old and warped.. Love distressed wood and think some pieces are wormy chestnut but think its mostly just knotty pine that’s been sitting in a old barn. Boo Hoo. My FIL spent so much time on it I hate that it’s not being used but it’s so uneven and so big. He also filled in the imperfections (worm holes?) with wood fill….I about died! Perhaps I should just take some tourtue tools to it and paint it black like yours!
