DIY Message board from calendar holder

Message board from calendar holder

I found this $2.99 beauty at Goodwill, when I shared my thrifty haul on Facebook, someone said it was a Lang calendar holder. In my mind all I could see was the old fashioned church attendance board. I’ve added affiliate links, here’s what I did.

Supplies needed:

  • perpetual calendar holder
  • flat Balsa wood strips- 2 sizes – I found these at Hobby Lobby
  • glue (hot glue and tacky glue)
  • paint
  • letters or numbers ( click for: Lightbox letters)

Directions:

  1. Spray paint the calendar holder. I also added stripes, optional and lightly sanded the whole piece.
  2. Measure and cut balsa wood strips to fit across the calendar holder.
  3. Glue the small strip to the larger one, this will create an area to hold the letter.
  4. Use the letter as a guide for spacing and hot glue the balsa wood strip to the holder.
  5. Place the letters to create your quote.

tip: I used tacky glue for the balsa wood, they are so small, you would burn your fingers!

    1. I really enjoyed this project! I never would have thought to make the letter railing like this with the balsa wood. LOVE how you helped to inspire me this way! I’m thinking I might make specific letters using thrifted plastic bottles and/or containers with the clear packing tape transfer method using jet printed font letters. THAT will be fun! Thanks loads for sharing such a wonderful idea!

    2. Great idea; love the curves of the frame and the stripes make it pop. I’m still learning to think outside the box about repurposing!
