Thrift store makeover paper roll holder from quilt rack

Hello friends it’s that time of the month…time for Thrift Store Decor makeovers! I’m actually kind of proud of myself. This was a recent find and I’ve already transformed it! It’s not gathering dust in the garage, like a lot of the other things that I couldn’t live without!

Are you in need of a handy paper roll for your studio, kitchen, or craft room? Perhaps you’re tired of rummaging through drawers to find a scrap of paper or constantly searching for a misplaced roll of paper towels. Look no further than your local thrift store! With a little creativity and some basic supplies, you can transform a thrift store find – a wall mounted quilt holder – into a functional and stylish wall mounted paper roll.

Not only is repurposing thrift store finds a fun and budget-friendly way to add character and uniqueness to your home, it also helps reduce waste by giving new life to items that might otherwise end up in a landfill. And the benefits of a wall mounted paper roll are endless: it saves counter space, keeps your work area clean, and allows for easy access to paper when you need it. Plus, with a wall mounted paper roll, you can customize the size and type of paper to fit your needs – whether it’s for drawing, note-taking, or cleaning up spills.

Here’s the beauty shot of the quilt rack, it was $3.99. The before:

Detailed Steps for the Wall Mounted Paper Holder

Click here to see a short summary of the steps, or continue reading for the detailed version.

Step 1: Remove the 2 pieces that hold the paper.

Start by unscrewing the two pieces that hold the quilt in place. Once you remove them, you’ll be left with a flat board with a dowel rod holder attached.

Step 2: Trim the 2 pieces, so the paper roll fits snug against the roll holder.

Next, you’ll need to trim the two pieces of wood that were originally used to hold the quilt, so they fit snugly against the roll holder. Measure the width of the dowel rod holder and cut the two pieces of wood to match that width.

Step 3: Measure and cut a dowel to fit the paper and extent past the dowel holder.

Cut a dowel rod to the desired length of your paper roll, plus a little extra to extend past the dowel holder. Sand the edges of the dowel to smooth out any rough spots.

Step 4: Drill a small hole in each end of the dowel, the size of a skewer.

Using a drill, create a small hole in each end of the dowel rod that is the same size as a wooden skewer. This will create a stopper for the paper roll to prevent it from sliding off the dowel.

Step 5: Paint the board and decorate to your heart’s desire.

Once the dowel is in place, it’s time to decorate the board. Paint it a color that complements your decor, or add decorative elements such as stencils, stickers, or washi tape. The possibilities are endless!

Step 6: Hang and enjoy!

Finally, hang your new wall-mounted paper roll in your desired location and enjoy its functionality and style. Use it for drawing, note-taking, or even cleaning up spills. With a wall-mounted paper roll, you’ll have easy access to paper whenever you need it.

List of Supplies

Paper roll

Waverly Paint and Liquid Wax

D-Ring hooks

I used my Ryobi drill with a forstner drill bit to cut the hole and my Ryobi jig saw to trim the paper holder pieces.

repurpose a hanging quilt rack

Here you can see where I drilled all the way thru on the former quilt rod holder in photo 1 and 2. In photo 3 you can see where I shortened the rod holder and in photo 4 I added d-hook to hang the paper holder. Notice in #4, I flipped the board over and painted the reverse side. The original art is still preserved on the back!!

Add galvanized letters to sign

I found these galvanized letters at Hobby Lobby and they were 50% off! I love the farmhouse look that it gives the sign.

To keep the paper on the dowel

To keep the dowel in place, I drilled the two small holes and added skewers.

How to create a driftwood look with paint and wax

I painted the paper holder with Waverly Chalk in the color Mineral. I love this light gray and to finish off the project I waxed with the liquid Waverly White Wax. It’s so easy to use and and creates a white washed, drift wood finish.

My niece came over Sunday and I had her write this quote on the paper. Her handwriting is so much better than mine. I’m using my paper roll as a sign but it would be a great menu, grocery list or family note center.
