I’ve been working on our outdoor space, and I wanted to share a few of my thrifty ideas…
Is your deck ready for summer living?
After moving in the fall, I could not wait to get started preparing our outside spaces for spring and summer. We have a wood deck off the living room and a cement patio under it. I love both spaces, even though the deck gets a lot of direct sun, it’s a favorite of mine to have morning coffee, a glass of sweet tea or even lemonade on in the evening. We love to grill store bought pizzas on the big green egg for a quick summer meal or start a Boston butt early on Saturday morning and let it cook slowly while we mess around the house. I bet you can almost smell it!
My deck check list is almost complete:
- I made some colorful pillow covers last year for the outdoor pillows and they held up very well.
Use outdoor fabrics, they hold up for several years, even on an open deck.
- Add candles to inexpensive lanterns for low light. Even though we have outdoor lights, I prefer the glow of a candle and the sounds of the early evening. It’s so relaxing.
- Find items at Goodwill, that you spray paint with outdoor paint like this garden stool.
- I also have this thrifted bamboo table that’s perfect in front of the outdoor love seat.
Thrift stores, like Goodwill are great places to find inexpensive pieces of furniture to add to your outdoor spaces.
- Add plants for color
- Clean and revitalize your deck…
You can see my deck boards pretty good in this photo, and I bet you guessed that’s my next project! We’ll be using BEHR DeckOver, available at Home Depot, it creates a durable smooth coating to revitalize tired decks, patios, porches and pool decks (even when previously stained), it’s a budget friendly solution for our tired deck. Perfect for the railing too, it can be used on both vertical and horizontal spaces, 100% acrylic formula that’s splatter-resistant and conceals cracks and splinters up to ¼”deep! It also dries four times thicker than traditional stain. With 54 solid custom colors, I’m sure I can find a color that we love 😉
Another thing that I love about the deck, bird watching!
Don’t forget about the birds when you’re prepping your outdoor space. I added a cute bird feeder in the wooded area. I’ve seen beautiful cardinals and blue birds.
I hope the weather is nice and you can get out and enjoy your deck or patio!
Happy warm days spent on the deck, enjoying this beautiful weather!
