Make a Tree Stump Side Table

A couple years ago, or maybe it was last year.

A storm blew through the neighborhood and a friend of mine lost a few trees.

I gained a couple side tables.

Before they wereย ordinary, run of the mill stumps.

Items used to transform these beauties.

I used Minwax Colonial Walnut Wood-Sheen Rubbing Stain and Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane.

ย I wanted the wood grain to show, but I also wanted to protect the finish.

I predrilled, used wood screws to hold the casters on.

(I used these from Lowe’s. ย They look heavy duty, those stumps are heavy ๐Ÿ™‚

We didn’t have a chainsaw, so we leveled with shims made from pressure treated deck wood.

This short one.

I turned it so that the top has the most surface, in case we want to play checkers on top.

I’ll be doing several posts on the reFreshing of the dock. ย Breaking down, the things that I did. ย I will try to do one a week, I don’t want you to get bored with the dock. ย It’s not a boring place, but it is a great place to relax.

Do you think you’ll be making any stump side tables?

    1. I do the same thing with the stumps and use them for the base for a bird bath. I use a clay or plastic saucer for the water.

    2. I remember seeing these from you over a year ago and loved them! I am now the owner of two stumps I got from a neighbor. They have bark on them but I’d like the bark off and do something similar to what you did. Did yours have bark and if so, how did you remove it? They’ve been sitting in my garage for a month or so, I’m hoping to dry them out and maybe that will be easier to remove the bark. Thanks for any advice you have! Sharon

    3. Showed this to my husband…he is totally going to make some of these. Our neighbor had a couple black walnut trees that fell (almost hit their house) & they hired my dh to clean it all up. He has the wood in our back yard. So excited to see some of these beautiful tables! Now I just need to get him to build my deck out back to put them on, lol!

    4. Tree stumps are so super expensive to buy. I’ve been dreaming of one that could my hands on too. Great job. Your patio deck is looking great. First find on your blog but I’ll definitely be back.

    6. I love them, and yes! I will eventually make one. A weekend at the farm usually means a stump or two to “play” with. I can’t wait to see the rest of the dock. Looks like a great place to relax!

    11. Those are amazing Debbie! Last year we had to have a tree in the back yard cut down by the power company. I kept telling myself to save some of it but didn’t . Also love your new haircut!:)

    12. Hi Deb

This looks PERFECT in the corner of the room. It just naturally goes with the palm and the fresh outdoor feeling of your space. The size and and shape are perfect, too. My neighbors tree fell down back in the fall and I got all excited thinking I would ask for a piece of the trunk, but the center of it was hollow. ๐Ÿ™

    13. Very cute, Debbie – have you seen the latest issue of “Country Living”? The front cover features a kitchen table that uses tree stumps as seating – I can’t imagine sitting on them every day, but for occasion use on your deck, I think they are great!

    14. These are great. I had six stumps to use as seats around the fire pit for years. I wanted to turn a couple into side tables but my husband got rid of them all one day cleaning up the yard! I was so upset.
