Chalk Couture Fall Chalkboard Decor

I gave my classic chalkboard a fresh fall look using Chalk Couture chalk paste and the Autumn Favorites transfer. The creamy Vanilla design came out crisp and pretty, and a little floral accent with loose neutral ribbons added the whimsical finish I had in mind.
Why I Love a Seasonal Chalkboard
A large chalkboard is one of my favorite decorating pieces because I can use it over and over. I enjoy adding designs to wood, old fence posts and all kinds of found pieces, but I always come back to a classic chalkboard.
This one was already clean and ready for a new season. When Christmas comes around, I can spray the surface with water, use a plastic scraper to remove the design and chalk it again. That makes it easy to enjoy something new without finding storage space for another finished sign.
The Autumn Favorites transfer fit the board beautifully. It includes warm blankets, crisp mornings, chilly nights, hot chocolate, harvest moon, soft flannel and crackling fires. There are also sweet fall designs along the bottom, including leaves and a cup.

Choosing the Transfer and Color
I used the Autumn Favorites transfer with Vanilla Chalk Paste. Vanilla is one of my favorite colors because it gives the look of traditional chalk while feeling a little warmer than bright white. It also worked nicely with the neutral flowers and ribbons I planned to add.
The transfer has a dividing line that allows the sections to be used separately. I left that line untouched and created one continuous design instead. Using a single paste color kept this project quick and gave the different fonts and small fall details plenty of room to stand out.
Reusable transfers make seasonal projects like this simple. The paste moves through the silkscreen areas, and the transfer can be cleaned and saved for another project. I would also love to use this design on a flannel shirt or another fun fabric project with the proper medium.
Using Chalk Couture Chalk Paste
Work in Sections With Paste and Peel
Skinny letters need a little extra attention because the paste can begin drying in the screen while you work. I used the paste and peel method to keep those fine words looking clean.
I started at the top and spread the thick Vanilla Chalk Paste across about half of the transfer. Once that section was covered, I lifted the transfer to reveal the design before the paste had time to dry in the screen. The letters looked beautiful and crisp.
I placed the transfer back down and continued with the lower section. I worked around the dividing line, then covered the leaves, cup and remaining words. A small part of one leaf needed another pass, so I laid the transfer back down before lifting it completely and filled in that spot.
This technique gives you time to check the design as you go. If paste dries in the screen, wash the transfer and try that section again. Large transfers are especially easy for me to clean in the sink, and I wash my squeegee at the same time.
Let the Design Dry
Fresh paste can smear when touched, so I let the design dry before handling the chalkboard and adding the decorations. Once dry, the paste stays in place during normal use.
I had one tiny spot where my squeegee touched the dividing line, and the reusable surface made that easy to handle. Small mishaps feel much less stressful when the whole design can eventually be cleaned away and refreshed.
Adding Flowers and Ribbon
I wanted a little extra texture at the top without making the decoration permanent. I had a bunch of fall flowers from Hobby Lobby with a metal section, so I positioned part of it along the top edge of the chalkboard.
My glue gun was ready, but I ended up leaving it unplugged from the project. I like changing my decor, and a temporary accent lets me reuse both the flowers and the chalkboard later.
For the finishing touch, I pulled out one of my Hobby Lobby ribbon bundles. These bundles include a mixture of ribbon styles, which works especially well when I want something loose and whimsical. The ribbons in this bundle were all neutral shades, so they complemented the Vanilla design without covering up the lettering.
I found the end of each ribbon, gathered them together and threaded them through the metal part of the floral piece. After tying them in place, I adjusted the lengths and fluffed the bundle so it hung down one side. The ribbons also helped disguise how the temporary flowers were attached.
An Easy Fall Chalkboard to Refresh Later
The finished chalkboard has the warm fall feeling I wanted, with plenty of lettering, pretty seasonal details and a soft neutral accent at the top. I also love that every part can change. The flowers and ribbon can come off, the paste can be removed with water and a plastic scraper, and the same chalkboard will be ready for its Christmas design.
