Chalk Couture Transfers

A Chalk Couture transfer is a reusable silk screen with an adhesive back. You stick it down, spread paste over it, and peel it off. That is the whole trick, and it is why the lines come out sharp when a stencil would have bled.

How a transfer actually works

The design is cut into a fine mesh, and everywhere the design is open the paste goes through. The adhesive backing holds the mesh flat against your surface so nothing creeps underneath. That is the difference between this and a stencil, where paint always finds the gap at the edge and you end up touching it up with a brush.

You spread Chalkology Paste across the open design with a squeegee, scrape the extra off, and lift the transfer straight up while the paste is still wet. The design is there in one pass. On a nonporous surface it stays put but wipes off with water if you want to change it, and on bare wood or paper it soaks in and stays for good.

Fuzz a new transfer before you use it

This is the thing I wish somebody had told me on my first project. A brand new transfer comes out of the package with adhesive strong enough to pull paint right off a painted surface when you peel it. Press it against a lint-free cloth or an old T shirt five or six times first. It picks up just enough lint to calm the tack down without losing its grip.

How long one lasts

I get 8 to 12 uses out of a transfer. The number is almost entirely down to how fast you wash it. Paste that dries in the mesh is what kills a transfer, not the peeling or the pressing. I take mine to the sink the moment I lift it, wash with lukewarm water and mild soap until the water runs clear, then lay it sticky side up to dry and put it back on its backing sheet to store flat.

Questions I get about transfers

How many times can you reuse a Chalk Couture transfer?

In my experience a Chalk Couture transfer lasts 8 to 12 uses. Wash it right after every project and you will land at the top of that range. Let paste dry in the mesh and you will land at the bottom.

What is a Chalk Couture transfer made of?

It is a silk screen design with an adhesive backing. The adhesive is what holds it flat against the surface, and that tight contact is what gives you a crisp line instead of the bleed you get under a stencil.

Do you have to fuzz a new transfer?

Yes, and skipping it is the most common first-project mistake. Press a brand new transfer against a lint-free cloth or an old T shirt a few times before you use it. Straight out of the package the adhesive is aggressive enough to lift paint off your surface when you peel it.

What is the difference between a transfer and a heat transfer?

A regular transfer is the reusable silk screen you push paste through. A heat transfer is a one time design you iron or press onto fabric, and it is permanent. They are different products that happen to share a word.

How do you clean a Chalk Couture transfer?

Lukewarm water and mild soap, right away, before the paste sets in the mesh. Rinse until the water runs clear, lay it sticky side up to air dry, then put it back on its clear backing sheet and store it flat.
