Whether you have one dedicated day to doing laundry, or if you do one load each day throughout the week, that doesn’t mean you should throw everything into the washing machine each week. The truth is that many of us don’t wash things enough, or we may be washing them too much. When it comes to clothing and other items in your home, you may be having a difficult time figuring out how often to clean each piece. To determine how frequently you should wash everything, there’s a simple formula that I’m going to share with you!

How often do I wash this, laundry tips.

Items you should wash after each wear

When it comes to which things you should wash after every wear, this is debatable. For items such as shirts and pants, it will depend on whether or not you got sweaty in them. Clothes such as workout gear, tights, underwear, and socks should all be washed after each wear. If you have spilled something on your shirt and needed to treat it, then you should clean it after wearing as well.

Items you should wash every day

If they go unused, you don’t need to clean these things. However, if they do get used, you should be cleaning these items every single day. These items include hand towels, dish towels, and washcloths. These items are typically used for cleaning and getting clean and should go in the laundry basket at the end of the day.

Items you should wash after three wears

As I mentioned with the each wear portion, this will vary as well. These clothing items don’t get worn as often and can be worn up to three times before they need to be washed. These items include pajamas, bath towels, bras, dresses, skirts, and pants.

Items you should wash every week

These things should be washed every week unless you are sick. When we are sick, we often sweat in our sleep, and some of these items should be changed more frequently. These items include sheets, pillowcases, and bath mats.

Items you should wash after one month

These items are worn and used sparingly, because of this, you can wait one month before cleaning these items. These items include your bathrobe, mattress pad, and pillow liners (if applicable).

Items you should wash every three months

These items don’t need to be frequently washed and can usually last three months before needing to be cleaned. If something is spilled on them or you feel they are looking grimy, then they should be washed sooner. These items include outerwear, throw rugs, shower curtains, and throw blankets.

Items you should wash twice a year

Your comforter and pillows do not need to be washed more than twice a year. Since both of these things have a layer before them such as a blanket or pillowcase, it’s unnecessary to wash them more frequently. If they start to smell, clean them sooner.

When it comes to clothes, I tend to over-wash them. Having clothes that aren’t quite dirty or clean everywhere makes it hard to remember what’s clean or dirty. This list will help cut down the amount of laundry you should be doing, and make sure you are aware of how often you should wash everything.
