Christmas Village Decor Ideas for a Vintage Toolbox

Live Videos · Home Interior · Crafts

I’ve been gathering Christmas village decor ideas, and an old red toolbox gave me the sweetest plan. I’m going to fill it with snow, tiny trees, and deer to create a little holiday scene, and I also shared how my jadeite Christmas ornaments look displayed with greenery and red berries.

My Vintage Red Toolbox Christmas Village

I found this small red metal toolbox at an estate sale while I was out with a friend. It had been used as a drill bit box or something similar, and it was pretty dirty when I brought it home. I washed it by hand in the sink and cleaned out the inside, and now it’s ready for a Christmas makeover.

The bright red finish is what caught my eye. I love farmhouse and rustic decor, especially when I can use an old piece in a completely different way. The toolbox already has plenty of character, so it doesn’t need a complicated makeover before I start decorating.

My plan is to open the lid and build the Christmas scene inside the bottom section. The raised lid will give the whole display a nice backdrop, and the metal edges will frame everything like a little shadow box.

Building Up the Inside

I picked up floral foam from Dollar Tree to fill the toolbox, but the first piece is a little too small. I need another piece so I can fill the inside and have enough support for the trees and other decorations.

Once the foam fits, I can cover it with faux snow and begin placing the little pieces. The foam will help hold the trees in place, and I can adjust their heights until the scene feels balanced.

I already have small trees and a pair of cute deer for the display. One deer took a tumble and lost its antlers, so that little mishap will become part of the arrangement. These small imperfections work just fine in a vintage project because everything already feels collected and well loved.

The toolbox is still in the planning stage, but I can already picture it filled with snow and tiny woodland details. It’s a fun way to use something you might already have tucked away in a garage, workshop, or closet.

More Christmas Village Decor Ideas

I also shared a new Winter Wonderland village set with wooden buildings and a church. You can use the complete set together or add extra houses and churches to make a larger village.

I have several color ideas in mind. One village could be painted red with white trim for a classic Christmas look. Another could use brown or tan with white details to look like a gingerbread village. I also like the finished example that was shown with the set, so I’m planning a version inspired by that one too.

A village like this gives you plenty of room to make it fit your own Christmas colors. You could keep the buildings together on a table or mantel, or spread them through a larger display with trees and greenery.

A Christmas Village on a Window

The coordinating transfer can also be used on a window. I’ve seen white chalk used with transfers to create a Christmas town across glass, and it gives the window a snowy holiday look.

That idea would be pretty in a kitchen, near a hot cocoa bar, or on a glass door where the village could become part of the room without taking up table space. The white design would also work with almost any Christmas color scheme.

My Jadeite Christmas Ornament Display

I brought out the jadeite Christmas ornaments that I made earlier and arranged them in a bowl from Dollar General. Their soft green color looks so pretty together, especially with the traditional red and green accents around them.

I tucked Dollar Tree greenery into the bowl and added sprigs with red berries. The greenery fills the gaps between the ornaments and helps keep the arrangement from looking too bare. Those little red berries bring in just enough color to tie the display into the rest of my Christmas decorating.

When you’re arranging ornaments in a bowl, start with the larger pieces and then tuck greenery around them. You can add smaller ornaments or extra berry stems wherever you see an open spot. I like an arrangement that feels full but still lets each ornament show.

This display would look lovely on a table, kitchen counter, or near a hot cocoa bar. Mine is part of the Christmas decorating that’s slowly coming together around my home.

Holiday Transfers and Handmade Gift Ideas

I also showed several holiday transfer options, including little woodland animals. The set includes an owl, squirrel, deer, and porcupine, and those designs would be sweet on fabric projects.

Potholders are one of my favorite easy gift ideas because you can add a holiday design and turn a useful kitchen item into something personal. The Frosty design would be especially cute on one, and you could pair it with a kitchen utensil or another small baking item.

I shared a black shirt made with the same puff additive I had demonstrated before. Mixing the additive with black created a raised design that adds texture to the shirt. It’s another way to change the look of a familiar holiday design and make it feel a little more special.

Between the vintage toolbox, the wood village, and the ornament bowl, I have several Christmas projects going at once. My next step is picking up more foam so I can start arranging the trees, deer, and snow inside that red toolbox.
